Finding an Attorney or Legal Advocate
When looking for an attorney or legal advocate, it is important to find one with experience in disability rights. CHADD and the National Resource Center on AD/HD are not able to provide direct referalls to individual attorneys; however, we can offer some suggestions on how to find an attorney who has experience with disability law:
- Contact your local bar association and seek out a lawyer specializing in disability rights. Visit the website of the American Bar Association (ABA) listed below, or call the ABA in Chicago at 312-988-5522 or, toll-free at 800-285-2221 to find the bar association nearest you.
- The Protection and Advocacy (P&A) System and Client Assistance Program (CAP) make up a national network of congressionally mandated, legally-based disability rights agencies. P&A agencies have the authority to provide legal representation and other advocacy services, under all federal and state laws, to all people with disabilities (based on a system of priorities for services). To find you local P&A/CAP, visit the Protection and Advocacy website below.
- Your local CHADD chapter may be able to make informal recommendations about attorneys in your community. Contact the CHADD chapter nearest you and ask if the chapter has a resource directory of local services and professionals.
